Drop and stack height are two different numbers, and buyers who are briefing a barefoot shoe factory for the first time often send only one of them. Drop is the heel-to-toe height difference. Stack height is how much material sits between the foot and the ground. A shoe can be zero drop at 4mm stack or zero drop at 8mm stack, and those two samples will feel nothing alike on a runner\u2019s foot.<\/p>\n

This matters at the tech pack stage rather than at the marketing stage. The drop number is decided by the last and the midsole profile, both of which are tooling decisions. Changing it after sample approval means new tooling, not a material substitution.<\/p>\n

Zero drop and low drop are different tooling, not different settings<\/h2>\n

Zero drop means the heel and forefoot sit at the same height: a 0mm difference. Low drop usually means 4mm to 8mm of heel lift. The two are not points on a dial that a factory adjusts during production. They come from different last geometry and a different midsole profile, so a brand that wants both is commissioning two builds.<\/p>\n

Read that table as a range of ground feel at a single drop. The trail and boot lines carry more stack because they need underfoot protection and a lug pattern; the running and training lines carry the least. A buyer asking for \u201clow drop\u201d on this line is asking for a last change, while a buyer asking for \u201cmore cushioning\u201d is asking for a stack change. Those two requests have different lead times and different tooling consequences.<\/p>\n

What changes at the factory when the drop number changes<\/h2>\n

A drop change touches the last first. The last defines the foot volume, the toe box width, and the heel-to-forefoot relationship, so a 4mm heel lift is a new last rather than an adjustment to an existing one. The midsole profile then has to match the last, and the outsole tooling has to match the midsole. Upper patterns cut for a zero drop last will not sit correctly on a lifted heel without pattern correction.<\/p>\n

This is why drop belongs in the first version of a tech pack. Moving it after a sample is approved restarts the tooling sequence rather than adjusting it, and the approved sample no longer represents what will be produced.<\/p>\n

Specifying drop and stack in an RFQ<\/h2>\n

An RFQ that separates the two numbers gets a quotable answer. One that merges them into \u201cbarefoot style\u201d does not, because the factory cannot tell whether the request is for a last change or a material change.<\/p>\n
